wine

I like wine.

I don't really like to drink it.  I haven't acquired the taste.  And I don't think there is anything wrong with drinking wine.  Jesus drank it.  His first miracle was making it.  And no, I don't think it was grape juice.  Sin is in drunkenness, not in drinking.  The same way that sin is in gluttony, not in eating.  Sin is in the misuse of the good things God has given us.  Sex isn't wrong, sex outside of marriage and adultery are.

Anyway, back to my topic...

I first had wine for communion at the Anglican church we attended, and I liked it.  The church we've been going to offers both wine and grape juice.

Here's why I like wine.  It symbolizes the blood of Jesus. The blood of the New Covenant.  And the blood of Jesus is not impotent.  It has power.  The blood of Jesus has the ability to change your behavior.  Wine has the potential to change your behavior.  Not for the better necessarily, but it is not neutral.  Grape juice can only make you fat, it has no other power.  There is power in wine and there is power in the Blood.  Wine tastes alive.

I am not against using grape juice.  I just found that there was a great significance to me when I tasted the rich, tangy wine as the person holding the cup said to me, "This is the blood of Christ which was shed for you."  Last night at communion the man said, "This is the blood of Christ, the cup of salvation."

  1. Very interesting. I agree, Christs blood has power and the thing about wine is that it can make you drunk, but it can also have health-positive health benifits to it if taken right. Very interesting indeed!

  3. Great post! It seems many Christians are quick to point out the evils of drinking and forget about the evils of gluttony which seems to be a "Christian" and "American" issue. The hardest part is that we have to eat to live and we have to have self control to avoid overdoing it. I needed to read this post tonight to keep me from eating some stuff I want, but have zero need for... Thanks for the reminder!

  4. I'm not interjecting judgment here, believe me. I came out of the world and experienced drunkenness plenty of times. Not good. I also loved wine but preferred not to drink it to get drunk.

However, when I got saved I asked the Lord if it was wrong to drink alcohol. He let me know it would be wrong for me for a number of reasons, one of which was the fact that many of our friends were achoholics and they needed to see that Jesus had made a difference in how we could enjoy life. Another of the reasons was exemplified in the story of Pistol Pete Maravich (professional basketball player)who at the first taste of beer as a young man became instantly addicted to alcohol and nearly ruined his life before the Lord rescued him many years later.

Just the other side of the coin is all.

  5. This is great. You know, it's interesting, I'd never had real wine for communion until the prayer meeting a few weeks ago that you missed (I think you were sick) and it was amazing. Wine has such depth to it. It was a very interesting expression of the Lord.
